Mini Arena Build Instructions v1.1 (2019)

This is the build list for the RoboCupRescue Rapidly Manufactured Robot Challenge World Championships, to be held in Sydney, July 2019.

PDF version of this document plus related pages, as of 2019-02-21, available here.

A RoboCup arena consists of a number of Z-pallets, the terrains within them and posts that hold them up to form ramps and platforms.

This consists of the following:

30 cm scale (bays having 30 cm internal clearance, terrain elements each having 15 cm footprint):

  • 16x offset Z pallets (32x rectangular sub-pallets)
  • 16x sets of polycarbonate walls
  • 2x sets of ramps
  • 2x crossing gravel
  • 1x set of elevated crossing ramps
  • 1x set of stepfields
  • 1x align edges
  • 1x slalom
  • 1x hurdles

60 cm scale (bays having 60 cm internal clearance, terrain elements each having 30 cm footprint):

  • 3x offset Z pallets (6x rectangular sub-pallets)
  • 3x sets of walls, one side polycarbonate, one side wood
  • 2x sets of ramps
  • 1x set of stepfields
  • 1x hurdles

The following is the recommended list of parts to assemble, and materials to cut, ahead of the RoboCup competition (or ahead of any arena construction) to provide these elements. If these units are cut and assembled prior to the arena itself being built, it will greatly accelerate the arena building process.

10-15mm thick OSB Sheets:

Used in terrains. Provide flat (unassembled). Does not include parts required for what is listed in “Other Components”.

  • 6 x (A) 300 x 300 mm OSB sheets (for 30 cm Align Edges and Slalom)
  • 20 x (B) 300 x 600 mm OSB sheets (for 30 cm Gravel, Align Edges, Hurdles and Slalom)
  • 6 x 50 x 10 mm OSB sheets (for 30 cm hurdles)
  • 6 x triangles, 225 x 419 mm, tip at 30 degrees (for 30 cm gravel)
  • 18 x 600 x 600 mm OSB sheets (for 60 cm walls)
  • 3x 600 x 1800 mm OSB sheets (for 60 cm walls)
  • 1x 1200 x 1200 mm OSB sheet (for 60 cm improvised hurdles)
  • 2x 1200 x 2400 mm OSB sheets (for 60 cm manipulation terrain)

5-6mm clear polycarbonate sheets:

Used in walls. Should be drilled as shown. Provide flat (unassembled).

  • 160x (A) 300 x 300 mm (12 x 12 in) clear polycarbonate 5-6mm (approx. 1/4″) sheets with holes drilled as follows.
  • 32x (C) 300 x 900 mm (12 x 36 in) clear polycarbonate 5-6mm (approx. 1/4″) sheets with holes drilled as follows.
  • 12x 600 x 600 mm clear polycarbonate 5-6mm (approx. 1/4″) sheets.
  • 3x 600 x 1800 mm clear polycarbonate 5-6mm (approx. 1/4″) sheets.

50 x 100 mm (approx.) wooden posts:

Used in supports and slalom. Provide bundled (unassembled). Does not include parts required for what is listed in “Other Components”.

  • 4 x 100 mm (approx) (for 30 cm scale slalom)
  • 15 x 300 mm (for 30 cm scale supports)
  • 15 x 1,200 mm (for 30 cm scale supports)
  • 4x 1,800 mm (for 60 cm scale manipulation terrain)

50 mm Pipes:

Used in the 30 cm scale hurdle. Outer diameter should be within 5mm of 50mm.

  • 3 x 300 mm
  • 1 x 600 mm

100 mm Pipes:

Used in the 60 cm scale hurdle. Outer diameter should be within 10mm of 100mm.

  • 3 x 600 mm
  • 1 x 1,200 mm

Other Components:

These parts should ideally be pre-fabricated prior to the competition. Note that the previously mentioned quantities do *NOT* include the materials for the following.
